I recently spent two weeks in the Philippines and would be happy to share some tips based on my experiences! The country is incredibly diverse, so there's plenty to do depending on your interests.
For beaches, Palawan is a must-visit. El Nido and Coron offer stunning limestone cliffs and crystal-clear waters. You can join boat tours hopping between the islands, perfect for snorkeling and relaxing by the beach. Another fantastic spot is Siargao, especially if you're into surfing or just want to enjoy the laid-back island vibe.
If you're interested in nature, visiting the Banaue Rice Terraces in Northern Luzon is unforgettable. These terraces are over 2,000 years old and demonstrate a unique interaction between natural landscape and human ingenuity. Hiking in this area will also give you a glimpse into the traditional way of life of indigenous people.
For a mix of culture and history, a visit to Intramuros in Manila is worth it. This is the old district dating back to Spanish colonial times. Additionally, Vigan in Ilocos Sur is a charming city with preserved colonial architecture. It's also fun to ride a "kalesa" (horse-drawn carriage) there.
Public transportation like jeepneys and tricycles is part of the adventure, but they can be crowded and routes might be tricky to figure out. Renting a car could give you more flexibility and comfort, especially if you plan to visit places that are a bit off the beaten path. However, remember that traffic, especially in Metro Manila, can be quite a challenge, so plan your travel times accordingly.
When it comes to food, don't miss trying adobo (a savory stew), lechon (roast pig), and pancit (noodles). For something sweet, try halo-halo, a cool dessert perfect for the tropical climate. As for souvenirs, local markets are the place to find unique items like woven crafts from the Indigenous communities and hand-made jewelry.
I suggest checking recent travel guides and blogs specific to each destination for the most up-to-date recommendations and safety information. Are there any specific activities you're more inclined towards, like diving or hiking, so I could give more targeted advice?
